2023 LEADers’ summit
We are so excited to host an in-person Leaders' Summit this year! Although the NICA Online version of the summit is great, there's nothing like connecting in person, learning from one another, and okay, here's the clincher, to do all this in OAKRIDGE (riding anyone?).
Who should attend: Anyone starting a new team and/or coaches and team directors looking to level up.
Why: The intent of this event is to bring our coaching community together to learn, share ideas and collaborate on best practices. Some of our coacehs have been part of the league since we launched in 2018, some have been involved for a couple years, and some will be experiencing the league as a coach for the first time this year. Everybody has something unique to add to the conversations we'll be having; we look forward to collaborating with you!
Riding: We're working with Cog Wild to set up a shuttle system for those interested in doing some riding.
Accommodations: Free camping (with showers) available on-site for tents, RVs, vans, and trailers. Hotels and Airbnb's are available in Oakridge and Westfir.
In addition to the Leaders' Summit on Saturday, we'll be offering NICA Certified First Aid and On-the-Bike Skills 101 and On-the-Bike Skills 201 clinics on Sunday. Come just for the day or spend the whole weekend with us!
April 29 (Saturday): Leaders’ Summit from 8-4:30pm
Saturday's seminars cover the nuts and bolts of working with middle and high school student-athletes in the context of a NICA mountain bike club. Saturday's seminars cover basic knowledge all NICA head coaches, assistant coaches, and ride leaders should be aware of and incorporate into their duties.
April 29 (Sunday): NICA Certified First Aid and/or On-the-Bike Skills 101 or 201 Clinic
NICA Certified First Aid from 8-10am
Mountain biking is a sport of inherent risks and injuries can happen away from municipal emergency medical services. Our license program meets industry standards for first aid training to ensure NICA student-athletes (and fellow volunteers) receive appropriate care and response when emergencies occur. The NICA Certified First Aid course is a combination of basic First Aid and Wilderness First Aid training that we require for teams practicing in front country and/or urban environments. Completion of this 8hr course is one of the qualifications you'll need to become a level 2 or 3 coach. This is a hybrid course provided by Adventure Medics; 6 hours will be done online beforehand and the remaining 2 will be in-person on Sunday. Register for the course here.
On-the-Bike 101 and 201 Clinics from 10:30-2:30pm
The OTBS 101 clinic teaches the progressive steps needed to teach anyone (even yourself!) both basic and advanced mountain biking skills. You will also learn about experiential teaching techniques, how to accommodate different learning styles, and how to create a positive learning environment for young riders. The majority of this clinic will be held outdoors, so please bring your bike and appropriate riding and safety gear for the weather.
Scholarships
A limited number of partial and full scholarships are available for those who need financial assistance. Please fill out this form and we'll let you know how we can help!
Lodging
Complimentary camping and showers will be available on-site. RVs, tents, trailers and campervans and tents are all welcome! There are no water or power hookups.

If you intend to participate with a group of coaches, please register individually so we can give you proper credit for attending.
Once all 5 sessions are completed, you will automatically be sent an email with your certificate of completion. You can then upload your certificate to your PitZone profile.
You don’t have to attend all 5 sessions to get CEU credits. You will still receive credit for the number of sessions you attended. Please email Mike McGarry at mike@nationalmtb.org when you’re finished with your sessions; he will email you a certificate for the CEUs based on the number of sessions you’ve attended.
For example, you are a Level 2 coach and only need 3 CEUs. You can attend 3 of the hour-long weekday sessions as your schedule allows. Let Mike know via email and he’ll send you a certificate with 3 CEUs for you to upload in PitZone.
Please direct all questions regarding this program to Mike McGarry at mike@nationalmtb.org.
